Blogging Code of Ethics

Blogging Code of EthicsDo you blog with integrity?
A recent CNN article also talked about how "mother-bloggers" having their group integrity compromised by the increasing trend of unethical blogging practices.
(See:http://www.cnn.com/2009/TECH/08/10/mommy.bloggers.ethics/index.html)

These are some of the things that have been called out by critics to be unethical. Bear in mind that not everybody is doing these:

  • writing a favorable reviews in return for free stuff and free trips
  • writing paid posts and sponsored reviews without proper disclosure
  • writing irresponsible reviews (raving about a product that is actually bad)
Bloggers need to go back to the basics and write from the heart. Blogs do not have to be popular, witty, highly technical or deep. They do not even have to make money. They just have to be honest.

If bloggers are being paid to write a specific post, I think their readers need to know about it. If bloggers are endorsing something that they have vested interest in, then it has to be disclosed.

If you are a fellow blogger, and you agree that bloggers need to blog with integrity, then sign the pledge and get the badge. Let me know once you are done.

Bottled Water vs Tap Water

What are the advantages of bottled water? Is it cleaner and safer? Does it taste better? Watch this video from Penn and Teller's Bull***t which might help you gain a different perspective on the truth about bottled water.

What are the disadvantages of bottled water? It is more expensive compared to ordinary tap water. And bottled water contributes to wasteful packaging. Although there have been several attempts to reduce the environmental impacts (see:Spin on the Bottle: Water Packaging Gets Creative)

In our place in Kawit Cavite, our tap water sometimes looks and smells funny. That's why for me, I still need to buy filtered water from the local refilling stations. So, Bottled Water vs Tap Water, what's your take?

Money Pacquiao

Who is Money Pacquiao? Why is Money Pacquiao making news today? Where did the name "Money Pacquiao" come from?

Money PacquiaoMoney Pacquiao

The public has been recently bombarded with news about Money Pacquiao. No, the news development was not about Money Pacquiao's upcoming title fight with Ricky Hatton. It was actually about Money Pacquiao, his contract issues and his future political plans. It was also another chapter in a war between two rival media networks, with Manny Money Pacquiao being caught in the crossfire.

My wife and I had a long discussion about this matter last week. I told her that the truth would come out and that Money Pacquiao will be the ultimate victim of circumstance, while other people take advantage of him with their own agenda. Or not... do you agree? Read the news and formulate your own opinion on the matter. Even though Money Pacquiao is the most famous person in the world, I don't think people should expect too much from him besides boxing.

Give Pacquiao’s sins to the devil -Inquirer.net
Pacman raps ABS-CBN anew - Inquirer Sports
Pacquiao hurting from ABS-CBN incident - Manila Bulletin
Pacman 'sweet-talked' to TV deal - Philstar.com
Manny ‘hurting’ over Solar incident, says lawyer - ABS CBN News

By the way, where did the term "Money Pacquiao" come from? Apparently, when Money Pacquiao started winning major title bouts years ago, that was when celebrities, politicians and other influential people started betting on him and watching his fights live abroad. While most people were shouting "Manny! Manny!" when Pacquiao was winning, they were shouting "Money! Money!" because they were thinking of their winning bets.

Feel free to comment below. I would like to hear your own opinion on the matter.

Boyet Fajardo and Internet Vigilantism

I just read about the Boyet Fajardo scandal in numerous blog posts available from the internet:

I also noticed the spike on search on "Boyet Fajardo" on Google Trends:

Boyet Fajardo and Internet VigilantismIt reminded me of "8 Awesome Cases of Internet Vigilantism"
Yet another unintended side effect of the web has been the birth of the Internet lynch mob. Now, everything from child abuse to bad customer service can get the online masses whipped into a frenzy of Old Testament-style vengeance. Whether this is good, bad, or downright terrifying, we'll let you be the judge...
(Click here to read the article from source)
Read these blog posts about Boyet Fajardo and Internet Vigilantism and judge for yourselves. As for me, I have learned two things:

1. The internet is an infinitely powerful tool
2. People get better at saying sorry after getting caught on video

Jon Stewart and Jim Cramer

One one side, we have Jon Stewart, one of the most intelligent minds on TV Comedy. On the other side, Jim Cramer, the fast talking but often misunderstood stock adviser. Jon Stewart and Jim Cramer, we watched closely as the day to day events unfold on TV.

March 4, 2009
The classic take down on CNBC by Jon Stewart on the Daily Show started when Rick Santelli, a CNBC personality, 'bailed out' from appearing on the Daily Show after previously saying that he would.

March 9, 2009
Jim Cramer responded to Jon Stewart through his column in the Mainstreet.com. Somehow Jim took one for the team by being the only person who responded to the comedy skit from the previous week.

That same night, Jon Stewart had this to say in his show.

March 10, 2009
The Today Show guested Jim Cramer as he reacted to the previous night's episode of the Daily Show with Jon Stewart

Jim Cramer then also appeared as guest in CNBC's "Morning Joe" with Joe Scarborough as Joe sided with his network colleague.

Then that night, Jon Stewart had this to say on the Daily Show

March 12, 2009
Jim Cramer was scheduled to appear on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. But before that, Jim Cramer guested in Martha Stewart Living. Watch Jim Cramer as he appears on the Daily Show with Jon Stewart.

What's the next chapter in this epic battle between two giant networks? What is your take on what happened? For me, two things. One, I can get my news from Comedy Central. And two, what happened was good for TV ratings, but sadly, not for anything else...

You can also read through this ABC article about Jon Stewart vs. Jim Cramer: Who Will Win Shoutdown?

Smart Lipo

What is Smart Lipo? What does Smart Lipo do to your body? What are the detailed procedures for Smart Lipo? What are the good and bad effects of Smart Lipo? Where do I get more information?

I have been reading about Smart Lipo in the internet for some time now. I don't know how my interest got started (maybe when Vicky Belo guested in Mo Twister's Morning Show in Magic 89.9 last week). Right now, there is no Smart Lipo article in Wikipedia. So I just read from snippets of blogs and articles from different websites and this is what I learned so far.

Smart Lipo is a fat treatment procedure that uses a laser to dissolve fat and tighten the skin. Under local anesthesia, the laser is then focused on the areas where you want to dissolve the fats. The fats instantly turn into fluid which the body will drain the natural way. The laser will also tighten the skin area to make it appear more toned. This procedure is easier and less painful than the traditional liposuction method.

The advantages of Smart Lipo vs. the traditional method of liposuction are as follows: Smart Lipo is less intrusive; there is no surgical procedures that involve cutting or mechanical sucking. It is also less painful. The recovery period is shorter so you can go back to work earlier. There is minimal discomfort, there is barely any bruising or bleeding on the affected area. The skin will also be tightened so there is no problem of hanging skin. Also there is no know side effects for Smart Lipo.

What are the disadvantages of Smart Lipo? Sometimes it just doesn't work on some people. This blog post is talking about Comparing Smart Lipo with Waterjet Liposuction. Based on her assessment, she successfully treated a man through waterjet liposuction after the man was not satisfied with his Smart Lipo treatment for his whole abdomen area.

I got to read lots of free articles about Smart Lipo from articlesbase.com and ezinearticles.com. I also got the more detailed answers to my other questions from dermanetwork.org and hurlinghamclinic.co.uk wherein they discuss which areas are ideal for Smart Lipo treatment, who are qualified and not qualified for Smart Lipo, is the fat removal permanent, how long to see the results, how long will the effect be, etc.

You can also watch more Youtube videos about Smart Lipo.

I also read some discussion forums about Smart Lipo, and the feedback is more or less mixed. Some people are really happy with the procedure. While some are very disappointed with what they paid for. Some people advise to get a good doctor. While some people say it doesn't work at all for them.

I suggest you read as many articles and blog posts as you can about Smart Lipo from the internet. Then you can also call you local clinic about this procedure if you are interested to know more.

Ice Cream Maker

our ice cream maker toyI remember when I was a kid, we had this small Ice Cream Maker toy. We just put in the ingredients in a bowl and crank up the drum containing ice and salt. When the ice cream starts to freeze, it sticks on the drum. Then we can scrape it and it's ready to eat straight from the ice cream maker!

I also remember, my mother brought me some ice cream after my visits to the dentist. I realized that my craving for ice cream started when I was still very young and my mother had something to do with it...

I am now looking for an Ice Cream Maker so I can make my own ice cream from home. I am just looking for a small scale ice cream maker, not those with big ice cream equipment for business use. I checked with Amazon and it returned several products worth considering.

Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker is one of the most popular brands for ice cream makers. They showcase several ice cream maker models depending on the capacity and power requirements. They have a Cuisinart 1-1/2-Quart Automatic Ice Cream Makers which is a fully automatic ice cream, frozen yogurt, and sorbet maker. And they also have a larger model, the Cuisinart ICE-30BC Pure Indulgence 2-Quart Automatic Frozen Yogurt, Sorbet, and Ice Cream Maker in case I need something bigger.

How to choose the best Ice Cream Maker:

  1. Check out the ice cream maker brand. Is it reputable? Does it have local support for parts and repair service? Does it have a warranty?
  2. Read the product description and specs. Is it solidly built or are its parts loose thread easily? Is it made of durable materials or is it easily breakable? Does it have enough capacity? Does it require lots of power? Is the motor too noisy when being used?
  3. Check out the operating instructions. Is it simple to use? Are the instructions easy to understand? Is it quick to setup and clean after? Or is it messy? Can young kids use it?
  4. Check out the ice cream quality. Is the ice cream consistency good all throughout the container? How much time does it take to make the ice cream from scratch?
  5. Read the customer and expert reviews. Did the other buyers like it? What did they not like about it?
  6. Does it offer some freebies like free ice cream scoop, extra containers and recipe books? Does it offer discounts when you buy packaged with an ice cream recipe book?
  7. Check out the price. Is owning an ice cream maker worth the investment?
Try breaking in the Cuisinart Ice Cream Maker using some of these ice cream recipe books below and never run out of ideas for ice cream flavors:

Ben & Jerry's Homemade Ice Cream & Dessert Book The Complete Idiot's Guide to Homemade Ice CreamOld-Fashioned Homemade Ice CreamRecipe of the Week: Ice Cream

Why do I need an ice cream maker? There's nothing like home made ice cream made from fresh and natural ingredients. I can choose to make low fat and low sugar ice cream. I can choose to add fresh fruits and nuts. In other words, the ice cream maker makes it possible for me to make any kind of ice cream flavor that I want.

Eraserheads Final Set Concert Review

Eraserheads Final Set Concert Review
My wife and I arrived at the Mall of Asia at around 7pm and there were lots of people everywhere. Like ourselves, most of the people were there to watch the Eraserheads Live! The Final Set concert. As expected, the MOA parking areas were already full. Luckily, we managed to park in the SMX basement which was still relatively vacant. When we arrived, we just bought a quick take out dinner from Burger King and Auntie Anne's and immediately headed to the concert grounds...

Minutes before 8pm, Magic 89.9 DJ Andi-9 and Anne Curtis were joined by two other hosts I don't recognize, and opened the event by talking about the concert and its sponsors. Several minutes later, the live projector screens were playing MTV commercials and old features on the Eraserheads. They showed some old interviews about when the Eraserheads were formed, to when they had a series of hits, to when they received numerous awards including the MTV best music video for Asia.

After several more minutes, the screen counted down backwards from the letter 'Z' to 'E' (as in Eraserheads). Then, fireworks lighted up the stage and the Eraserheads played their first song Magasin. The crowd went wild, dancing and jumping to the fast beat of the music played by the best band of our generation. The songs kept on coming with Walang Nagbago and Maling Akala which Ely asked the audience to "name that tune".

The next songs were heavy rocking with Maskara, Poor Man's Grave and Waiting for the Bus. Then we were treated with a light and funny reggae rendition of Wag Mo Nang Itanong sung by Marcus Adoro. It was really funny because Marcus was singing playfully to the song. Then, the next three songs were sung by Raimund Marasigan: Slo Mo, Alkohol and Insomnia, which were the perfect songs for Raimund to sing given his energy and shouting voice. The last song was Torpedo before they took a short break.

Coming off from the break, the Eraserheads started playing laid back acoustic versions of Julie Tearjerky, Tikman ang Langit, Wishing Wells and Fine Time. The stage setup was complete with sofa and Ely asked if we liked their new house. Then they introduced their next song as "from the 70's..." The crowd screamed loudly when they heard the opening chords of Pare Ko.

Next, Ely sang Kailan solo with only a piano in the background, while the rest of the band prepares to go back to their electric guitars. The next songs played were Back2Me, Trip to Jerusalem, Spoliarium and Overdrive before they went for another short break. By this time they already played 21 songs and we were already very happy to have experienced the show.

Then we can hear Ely shouting "Francis! Francis!" and they kicked off the rest of the show with one of my favorite songs, Super Proxy. Too bad that Francis Magalona's death due to cancer happened at a tragic time, just the day before the concert. They said the day before that Francis Magalona was supposed to have a surprise number with them. By the way the crowd reacted, I can say that Francis Magalona really had a lot of supporters attending the concert. Long live Francism!

The band continued with their most sentimental tunes. Minsan was about a song about past friendships and I kept on thinking that this song is how we should remember the Eraserheads as a group. They started as friends in UP Diliman and even if they are moving on with their separate lives, they always have each other's friendship to come back to.

Next to be played was Alapaap, another beautiful song about getting "high". This song is also special to me because I was with my future wife when Ely sang this song in the UP Fair 10 years ago. It made me think of all the memories I had when I was in UP.

After Alapaap, they played the chorus of Kaleidoscope World. Kaleidoscope world is Francis Magalona's song about respecting other people's differences. Everybody was clapping as we all pay our final respects to the Master Rapper.

The last song of the concert was, of course, Ang Huling El Bimbo. Ely asked everyone to sing along to the last song to be performed by live the band Eraserheads. I embraced my wife while singing and dancing to the song and watching the fireworks display. The moment almost brought me to tears.

After we left the venue, we heard Raimund talking to the audience. He was asking the people "gusto nyo pa? tawagin nyo si Marcus..." We rushed back to the venue when we realized there was going to be an encore. Ely was there and the Eraserheads played 3 more for the road! Everybody was now in a party mood as we dance to the extra songs in celebration of the successful concert that happened. They played Ligaya, Sembreak and Toyang; Ely even went down from the stage to the audience and he let the people sing to Toyang.

It was really a memorable event for me and my wife. I would again like to thank Magic 89.9 for giving us the free tickets. Until the next concert!

The Eraserheads Live! The Final Set concert had a total of 29 songs:

1. Magasin
2. Walang Nagbago
3. Maling Akala
4. Maskara
5. Poor Man's Grave
6. Waitng for the Bus
7. Wag Mo Nang Itanong
8. Slo Mo
9. Alkohol
10. Insomnia
11. Torpedo
12. Julie Tearjerky
13. Tikman ang Langit
14. Wishing Wells
15. Fine Time
16. Pare Ko
17. Kailan
18. Back2Me
19. Trip to Jerusalem
20. Spoliarium
21. Overdrive
22. Super Proxy
23. Minsan
24. Alapaap
25. Kaleidoscope World
26. Ang Huling El Bimbo
27. Ligaya
28. Sembreak
29. Toyang

Update: I will be posting pictures coming from my friend who attended the concert from the VIP section.

More Will Lose Their Jobs This Year

More Will Lose Their Jobs This YearAccording to the UN, the World economy may lose 51 million jobs. This is of course the worst case scenario and we don't know how much is the impact here as it will vary for each region.

This is not to add to the doom and gloom atmosphere, but to tell everyone to prepare for the worst. If you think you are not affected today, well, things can change really quickly. Anyway, I am still hoping for the best.

Got Omega-3?

Got Omega-3 in your diet?Have you got Omega-3 in your diet? I have long been a fan of Omega-3 and every time I read a new article about Omega-3, it just reinforces my belief that everyone should increase eating foods rich in Omega-3.

Did you know that the other fatty acid called Omega-6, while being advertised as healthy, is in fact not? Because we already have an excess of Omega-6 in our bodies, and anything in excess is not healthy. Excess Omega-6 actually reduces the absorption of Omega-3 so even if you eat canned tuna or sardines rich with Omega-3, if the fish was canned with oil (except olive oil) rich in Omega-6, you are actually absorbing less Omega-3 in your body.

You can read the latest about Omega-3 in Bestlifeonline.com. I am actually tempted to copy the whole 7-page article in case they remove the article in the future...

What do you think? I suggest you don't just take my word for it. Do your own research on the topic. In my opinion, Omega-3 is the one single food that will change your life.

Hang On To Your Job

Hang On To Your JobIt is naive to say that the current global economic crisis will not affect the Philippines.

I think by now everyone knows about Intel's plan to close 5 factories worldwide (one being Intel Philippines) to cope with the current global economic crisis. Myself being a former Intel employee until just last year, I feel really sad upon hearing the finality of it all announced last week.

Intel was not the first company to make cost driven measures to ensure better chances of surviving through the current recession intact. Since late last year, 15,000 Filipinos, mostly in export zones, have already been out of the job, while 19,000 others faced reduced working hours. I have several friends and contemporaries who belong to these statistics.

Just as Intel was not the first, they will not be the last to announce layoffs. Intel is just one of the semiconductor companies with factory(ies) set up in the Philippines and there are other companies now who are feeling the same financial pressures Intel does. I will not be surprised if I hear more similar news in the future.

Actually, the current global economic crisis is not limited to the semicon industry. Experts predict more industries will be affected as time goes by. Even overseas Filipino employees are affected as there are also mass layoffs ongoing in companies abroad.

For those who still have jobs, hang on to it for as long as possible. Have some perspective. Do not think too much about the small things that irritate you in the workplace like bad cafeteria food, too many deadlines, or annoying co-workers. What is important now is that you still have a steady source of income. And that is crucial, since harder times are yet to come.

Credibility and the Social Media Expert

Credibility and the Social Media Expert
Is credibility important in social media? Are the social media experts giving advice worth following?

In my pursuit of continuous improvement for my blogging skills, one of the things I did was to study about Social Media and how it relates to blogging. In my initial search about the topic, I was overwhelmed with the amount of information available. I was also amazed with the number of people who give helpful tips and tricks on how to get better results from using Facebook and Twitter (as of this time, I am not a user of both of these tools).

Then, I stumbled upon Michael Gray's post where he recently tried to correlate the validity of the social media "advice" with the credentials of the social media "expert" giving the said advice.

To me, it all boils down to credibility which is highly valued by any society. Social media helped create the web 2.0 environment where you can learn something from just about anybody. We regard some people as the experts in social media because they seem to know more about Facebook, Twitter, etc. than we do. They also have the most "mileage" and the most extensive use of these tools; even though if we look more closely, sometimes, these experts seem to not follow their own rules...

So, how does this affect me? Based on my experience I found out I am good at separating the messenger from the message. If the advice makes sense to me, I don't give too much fuss about who said it. On the other hand, if the advice sounds wrong, the most highly regarded experts would not be enough to convince me.

Frustration (Wet Shoes)

Wet Shoes
Frustration is a part of life. And I deal with it.

It's high tide again here in our place. After work, I usually walk home from the jeepney stop. Yesterday afternoon, when I was only 10 meters away from our house, I saw that the tide was already starting to rise in our street. I tried to tiptoe through but my effort was futile. The water was already high and my feet got wet. When I got home I immediately removed my shoes and socks and washed my feet (some of the water is from the sewage).

Has anything like this ever happen to anyone else? I managed to successfully avoid the water from getting in my shoes for the most part of the flood. But as I reached the end, as I made the last few steps toward dry land, that's when the water started to get in my shoes. I eventually gave up tiptoeing and just let my feet get wet.

To put in a more general context. My experience was about frustration. After giving my best effort on something, the end result was not exactly what I wanted. And the worst part was not that I failed, but that I almost succeeded.

My recent experience reminded me that frustration is a part of life. I have learned to accept this fact long ago. It helps me to just focus my energy on things that matter most to me.

As William Faulkner said:

People need trouble -- a little frustration to sharpen the spirit on, toughen it. Artists do; I don't mean you need to live in a rat hole or gutter, but you have to learn fortitude, endurance.

Do Not Cook with Extra Virgin Olive Oil

Do Not Cook with Extra Virgin Olive OilCan I use extra virgin olive oil for cooking? Is extra virgin olive oil safe?

I initially thought cooking with extra virgin olive oil is healthy because the oil itself is healthy. After some research, I found out that extra virgin olive oil cannot be used for high temperature cooking.

Extra Virgin Olive Oil apparently has a lower smoking point than the other refined oils. Smoking point temperature is when oil begins to chemically break down and produce undesirable (read: toxic) byproducts. It is also the temperature when the oil starts to smoke and give bad taste to the food.

So to be safe, I never use extra virgin olive oil for cooking. I just use it for sauce and salad preparations. And I have another bottle of light olive oil which I can use for cooking if I wanted to.

Do you think I did the right thing? Let me know your opinion.

P.S. Afternoon update: I just finished cooking supper - smoked chicken longganisa. The best way to cook it is deep frying so I used canola oil this time.

Bad Moods are Contagious

sad personBad moods are contagious and can spread through friends and family across hundreds of miles, according to new research. Even before this study, we already know by instinct how we get negatively affected when people show their anger or sadness. This is why as much as possible, I avoid ranting and cussing in my blog. People are not interested to know how stressful my day was. They are reading to get entertainment, information, and insight.

See below for the full article by Stephen Adams

How grumpy people feel can be influenced not only by the state of mind of those closest to us, but also by friends of friends that we have never met like ripples from "pebbles thrown into a pond" , claim scientists.

Professor James Fowler of the University of California, said each 'unhappy connection' decreased the chance of a person being happy by seven per cent.

However, the effect works both ways with each 'happy connection' increasing the chance of a person's happiness by nine per cent.

The team led by Dr Nicholas Christakis, a sociologist at Harvard Medical School, and including Professor Fowler, made their conclusions after analysing 53,228 social connections between 5,124 individuals over time.

Dr Christakis said: "If you drop one pebble in a pond, it will create ripples out from the pebble."

He added: "Most people will not be surprised that people with more friends are happier, but what really matters is whether those friends are happy."

Moods - good and bad - tended to travel more freely in same-sex groups, they report in New Scientist magazine.

They found a happy friend increased the odds of someone being happy by 15 per cent - but that a friend of a friend boosted the chance by about 10 per cent, and a friend of a friend of a friend by about six per cent.

That was triple the two per cent chance of being happier caused by a £3,500 pay rise.

Despite physical proximity, the mood of a cohabiting partner was less than 10 per cent likely to have an effect.

Behaviour including drinking, smoking and even obesity can spread in a similar manner, the team claim.

Last year his team found a person's risk of gaining weight increased significantly when friends gained weight. If their friends gained weight a similar but lesser effect was evident on the individual.

He said: "Obesity appears to spread through social ties."

Sceptics may question how a person one has never met can have a direct influence on mood, and ask how the effects of individual friendships can be teased out of a mass of social connections.

How Much for a Gym Membership?

How Much for a Gym Membership? How much do you need to pay for a gym membership? And what is the real cost? Signing up for gym membership is actually the easy part.

A couple of months ago I was listening to the pitch of someone from a famous gym in Manila. To avail of their gym's amenities, I had to pay for monthly dues on top of the initial membership fee. Although they said that they could waive the one-time membership fee for me (they're too kind), I still had to pay for a substantial amount on a monthly or quarterly basis.

That may be a good deal for some people, but in my case, I won't get my money's worth. First of all, I already know that due to the inconvenient location of the gym relative to my place, I won't be able to go there as often as I want. Assuming I only go to the gym once a week, I would end up paying for only 4 sessions per month.

Secondly, I also know myself well enough that I may not be able to be consistent in my gym sessions. Less frequent workouts may result in over exertions "to compensate". Which may result in soreness of the whole body. Which may result to even less frequent gym sessions due to physical and psychological trauma.

My advice for people who are thinking of getting a gym membership: Do not get easily persuaded by the salespeople in getting the membership just because it is the right thing to do for yourself. Logic is not the only consideration because we are human beings and we all have limitations

1. Physical limitations. If the gym is more than 1 hour away from your place (as in my case), I don't think it is sustainable to go there 3x a week. Sure, you can try and maybe you can successfully complete 1-2 weeks without breaking your routine. But in the long run it would be too much time investment from you.

2. Psychological limitations. You would need to be consistent in your visits and that needs a mountain of will power. Motivation is not enough. You need to make it a habit. There will be lots of times when something unexpected will come up in your life and will easily screw up your routine.

3. Budgetary limitations. You my need your gym money for something more important like house mortgage or utility bills (it is debatable if cellphone bills are really more important but hopefully you get my point).

Bottomline, you need to be realistic in assessing your fitness goals. Gym membership is only one possible option. Based on your current situation, you need to determine how much is your real Cost of Fitness.

reference: http://www.cnn.com/2008/HEALTH/12/30/procrastination.economics/index.html?eref=rss_topstories

In a study on gym attendance, published in the American Economic Review in 2006, DellaVigna and colleagues looked at people who chose $80 monthly gym memberships over paying $10 a visit. These monthly members actually went to the gym only once a week, meaning they wasted $40 a month because of excessive optimism about how often they'd go.

Moreover, DellaVigna found a spike in gym enrollments around the start of the new year, but the dedication didn't last -- the new subscribers tended to go to the gym more than others for a month or two, and then their attendance dropped off to the lowest.

Pacquiao's Next Target is Ricky Hatton

Manny Pacquiao's camp is already talking with Ricky Hatton's camp to setup his next match after the incredible win over ODLH last December 7.

start blogging pacquiao I agree with the post linked below that boxing should be more than just sporadic main events scattered throughout the year. I also think these boxers should always be ready to prove themselves to the world by fighting the best of their contemporaries.

In my future posts, I will show proof that Manny Pacquiao is "the most famous person on the world" today.

Evolution of the Christmas Bonus

It used to be that business owners would give gifts to all of their employees as a sign of gratitude for all the hard work they have done for the year that passed. This was the origin of the "Christmas bonus". What happened and how come it is what it is now?

An owner of a small manufacturing company, Mr.X was a generous person. His business was doing well and profits were growing steadily. One Christmas, he decided to share the company's blessings to all of his employees.

A few years have past, the employees slowly got sick of always receiving ham for Christmas. Some say they didn't like to eat ham. Some say the brand of ham given was not the best. They started complaining. Mr.X heard about it and did something to remedy the situation.

A few years have past, the employees slowly got sick of always receiving gift baskets for Christmas. Some say they didn't like to carry the heavy gift baskets, while some say the gifts were still not enough. Some said they wanted to choose which gift they want to receive. They started complaining. Mr.X heard about it and did something to remedy the situation.

Do you know what happened next? Some employees didn't like the store whey they got the gift voucher from! Some said the store was too expensive while some said it was too cheap. They started complaining. Mr.X heard about it and did something to remedy the situation.

Since then, the Christmas bonus was not treated as a thank you from Mr.X. Rather, it was just that extra money the employees receive by the end of the year.

Board Exam Review Center

For the recent college graduates who are going to take their respective board exams, the review center is one of the ways to help them prepare. But not all review centers are created equal. I have outlined some tips on what to consider in choosing a review center.

Note: I am not endorsing any particular review center. I am also not going to mention which review center I attended when I was preparing for my own ChE Board Exams in the Philippines.

1. Check the review center's track record. How many students attend their review center and how many eventually pass the board exams? The percentage passing rate by far is the most important indicator in my opinion.

Review centers usually have several courses offered for various board exams. And a review center's track record may be variable: it may be good at one course but not good at another course.

2. Check the review center's faculty roster. Most of the review center teachers are also instructors and professors in colleges and universities. Ask around if anybody recognizes any of the teachers and if they are good.

3. Check the review center's course outline. Check if the subjects covered are complete and the depth of discussion is comprehensive. Check if they can advise which topics to review in depth and which topics to just review in summary.

4. Check if the review center shares sample exams and schedules mock exams that help simulate the look and feel of the actual board exams.

5. Check the review center's class size. A very big class size will reduce the focus on each individual's learning process. But a small class size may mean the review center is not known to deliver.

6. Check for any discounts for honor students. Review centers give discounts (even free classes) for honor students because honor students have a high probability to pass and even become board topnotchers. These give good publicity to the review center.

7. Check the price with respect to the amount of time spent to provide effective coaching and guidance. Cheap review centers might be due to lack of good teachers. But expensive review centers do not automatically mean they have an effective system.

Price is usually a big factor for a lot students. So extra care is needed to make sure the review center is "legit" and not just after one's money.

8. Check which review centers are being considered by friends and batchmates. Group effort provides an advantage over doing everything solo. Moreover, group study sessions after the review classes can help validate what was learned for the day.
